Thorax 1986;41:68-69 Farmer's lung after Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection
نویسندگان
چکیده
Farmer's lung is a hypersensitivity reaction to fungal spores in mouldy hay, most commonly Micropolyspora faeni. The type of immunological reaction is debated' but a high dose ofantigen is necessary and the inflammation may result from activation of the alternative pathway of complement, linked to a type 3 response. Detection of serum precipitins to fungal antigens is used as a diagnostic aid but it is unclear why up to 18% of men with sufficient exposure to antigen and with the serum precipitins do not develop symptoms.2 Two Cornish men are described who had long term exposure to dusty hay but who developed symptoms of farmer's lung only after infection with Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

An unusual case of farmer ' s lung in childhood
Introduction Farmer's lung is considered to be an extrinsic allergic alveolitis caused by the antigens found in hay moulds, of which Micropolyspora faeni is the most important in the United Kingdom. Farmer's lung occurs rarely in childhood and cases described in the literature have been mainly confined to older age groups (Rankin et al., 1962; Barrowcliff and Alabaster, 1968; Hughes etal., 1969...
متن کاملSecondary bacterial infections in children with proved Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
Reports of important pulmonary complications, including bronchiectasis, have been reported after Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.'-4 Two reports56 have noted more subtle pulmonary function abnormalities, several years after mycoplasma infection, in children. Haemophilus influenzae has been implicated as a secondary invader following initial Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in two reports." The c...
متن کاملChlamydophila pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae in respiratory specimens of children with chronic lung diseases.
BACKGROUND Persistent infection with Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydophila pneumoniae has been implicated in the progression or induction of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Evidence for this hypothesis has been obtained in adults either by serological methods or by direct pathogen detection using invasive procedures. METHODS We investigated nasal brush specimens and induce...
متن کاملPathogenesis of lower respiratory tract infections due to Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Legionella and viruses.
Acute infection of the lower respiratory tract comprises bronchitis, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. From a clinical point of view it may be diYcult to distinguish these disease entities and one infection may progress into another. The most common pathogens causing these infections are the primary respiratory viruses (respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza virus, adenoviruses, parainfluenza...
متن کاملBronchiectasis after mycoplasma pneumonia.
Infection by Mycoplasma pneumoniae is common and usually mild. A few cases are severe and deaths have occurred. Long term sequelae are rare. We describe the case of a 23 year old man who now has cylindrical bronchiectasis. His symptoms date from an episode of mycoplasma pneumonia, complicated by Stevens-Johnson syndrone, seven years previously. He is also unusual in that he has had a second epi...
